San Diego’s first high rise; the El Cortez, built in 1927 was the queen of the San Diego skyline until 1963. Downtown San Diego was pretty grim in the 60’s and 70’s full of seedy bars, tattoo parlors and shady ladies . In 1974 a group of businessmen started the revitalized the Gas Lamp district (listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980). As the Victorians were refurbished, the high rises followed. The first two were the Meridian 1985 and the two towers of Harbor Club 1992. Most downtown high rises were still for business. The condo movement really got underway with the assistant of Bosa. Their first project; Horizons 2002, lead the way for numerous high rise towers. While most of the highest buildings in San Diego are corporate offices or hotels. 12 of the 30 tallest buildings in San Diego are residential. Electra built by Bosa in 2007, with 43 floors is the tallest residential building. Coming soon Bosa Pacific Gate with 45 floors will take the record. check out the project here
